THE ORIGIN OF THE CLUB

The London & Home Counties Terrier Club was established in 1964 to promote the interests of all terrier breeds in London & the Home Counties, which consists of. The Counties of London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

We currently hold our Annual Terrier Show at Lockmeadow Market in Maidstone usually in September details are published on our Facebook page and on the Show Page of this site. We held our Golden Jubilee Show in September 2014.

All 27 Kennel Club Registered breeds of Terrier are scheduled every year.

We welcome spectators as well as exhibitors and new members, so come along and see some of the most historically important breeds of terrier for yourself.

HISTORY OF THE LONDON & HOME COUNTIES TERRIER CLUB

 The inaugural meeting of the London & Home Counties Terrier Club was held 10th December 1964 at the Albert Restaurant,Victoria, London. Group Captain A. G. Sutton OBE held the chair.

 At this meeting Mr B. G. Dennis was elected chairman, Mr T. J. Horner secretary and Mr C. W. Rippingale treasurer. Mr Horner held the position of secretary for fourteen years until retiring in 1979 through ill health.

He was followed by Mr Reg Hunt and Mr Wally Topham until April 1981.

 Mr M. Homan was elected club secretary in 1981 holding the position until his retirement in 2006, Mr P.Burke, Chairman and Mr C.Windsor elected treasurer. Alterations were made to the composition of the club and The London & Home Counties Terrier Club entered into its halcyon years and became one of the most important show dates on the calendar.
On Mr P.Burkes retirement Mr Peter Eva was elected chairman and remained so for almost 20 years. Mr Windsor also stepped down from his position around the same time being replaced by Mrs Margaret East as Treasurer upon retirement she emigrated to Australia with husband Terry,
In 2000, Mrs Gill Thomas became Treasurer holding the position for 5 years before her election as Secretary in 2006. with Mr Alan Muir as Treasurer. Mr B.Lay became Chairman resigning in 2014 being replaced by Mr David Payton. Mrs Alice Levy was elected Treasurer in 2011 the position vacated by Mr Muir.                             

2016 the Chairman Mr D. Payton , retired from the committee & was replaced by Mrs Gill Thomas as Chairman & Show Secretary with Mr Brian Collins voted in as Acting Secretary, becoming the Hon. Secretary for the club the following year.

This year also saw the inclusion of Jack Russell Terriers onto the Kennel Club register of recognised breeds and as a welcome addition to the London & Home Counties Terrier Club annual Show.

To date, the longest serving members of the L H C T C are Ella Eva (retired from the committee a few short years ago) and Mike Homan, both coming aboard during the second half of the 1970’s. Mr Homan was elected as a Life Vice President.at the 2015 Annual General Meeting in recognition of his long & distinguished service.

Following the 2019 Show Mrs Thomas announced her intention to step down from the position of Chairman & Show Secretary at the following AGM due to ill health, the Secretary Mr Brian Collins resigned from his post at this time. At the AGM on 14th March 2020 Mrs Gill Thomas was elected President, Miss Nicola Foster became the Honorary Secretary, Mrs Ailien Meyer took the Chair with Mrs Levy remaining as Treasurer. There were an additional four new committee members elected on that day. This coincided with the international outbreak of Covid which meant there were no further shows until 2021.

 At this point Alice Levy was obliged to leave the committee due to ill health and Ashley Harding was elected to replace her at the following meeting..

Mike Homan passed away on the 30th March 2023 and a service to honour his life was held on May 16th with a salute of Staffordshire Bull Terriers to see him into the Chapel of rest.
